Twins Foals Make Their Long Awaited Debut

PDF Print E-mail

For the first time in the history of the RDS a mare with twin foals will be exhibited at the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show. The twin filly foals, sired by the Thoroughbred Stallion ‘Shaandar’ and out of Irish Draught Mare ‘King’s Sister’, will be shown on Thursday, August 9 as competitors in Class 41. At birth one of the foals was bigger and stronger than the other, which is normally the case with twin foals, however since then both have flourished.

‘King’s Sister’ is a 10 year old grey mare who was sired by the Register Irish Draught (RID) Stallion ‘Island King’ (sired by ‘King of Diamonds’). ‘King’s Sister’ is owned Dermot O’Brien, Co. Limerick and was bred by Seamus O’Brien from, Co. Leitrim.

Their presence at this year’s Show is made more remarkable considering the chances of a mare giving birth to live twins is approximately 5,000 to 1 and in 80% of such cases, one or both of the animals will not survive.

Visitors to the Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show will be able to see ‘King’s Sister’ and her two jet black filly foals compete this year. ‘King’s Sister’ has been entered into Class 38, for Registered Irish Draught Mares, 5 Years Old or Over. The trio will then compete in Class 41 for Foals out of Registered Irish Draught Mares but not by Registered Irish Draught Stallions. Both classes take place on Thursday, August 9 in Ring 2.

This year’s Fáilte Ireland Dublin Horse Show will take place from August 8 -12.  To book your ticket and select your own seats, log on to www.dublinhorseshow.com or contact the RDS Ticketing Line on +353 1 240 7213 or LoCall 1850 882 883.
