Light-Weight Hunters

Thursday 15 August Ring 2
01. GELDING, 6 years old and over, capable of carrying up to 83kg (13st).
02. GELDING, 4 years old, capable of carrying up to 83kg (13st).
03. MARE, 4 & 5 years old, capable of carrying up to 83kg (13st).
04. GELDING, 5 years old, capable of carrying up to 83kg (13st).
05. MARE, 6 years old and over, capable of carrying up to 83kg (13st).
Middle-Weight Hunters
When: Where:
Friday 16 August Ring 2
06. MARE or GELDING, 4 years old, capable of carrying 83kg to 89kg (13st to 14st).
07. MARE or GELDING, 5 years old, capable of carrying 83kg to 89kg (13st to 14st).
08. MARE or GELDING, 6 years old and over, capable of carrying 83kg to 89kg (13st to 14st).
Heavy-Weight Hunters
When: Where:
Friday 16 August Ring 2
9. MARE or GELDING, 4 years old, capable of carrying 89kg (14st) and upwards.
10. MARE or GELDING, 5 years old and over, capable of carrying 89kg (14st) and upwards.

Aim

To demonstrate the Irish Hunter type horse, with quality, substance, movement and presence.  Also, to encourage and promote traditional breeding.

The horse favoured by the judges in the Show Hunter Classes is that ideal combination of quality, substance and presence, which will carry an adult at speed and with safety over varying countryside in all types of going.

Eligibility

These classes are restricted to ‘Irish bred’ horses only.

To be ridden by riders who have attained their 16th birthday by 1 January 2024.

Entry Fee

RDS Members: €325 each entry, Non-members: €365 each entry.

Owners are recommended to pay particular attention when selecting the weight categories for their entries. 

These classes may be limited to a maximum of 15 primary entries per class.  In the event of a limitation the first 15 correct primary entries received, and paid for, will secure entry.  Please note there may be additional secondary entries in the above classes.

Rules

It is compulsory that all 4 and 5 year old horses entered in these classes have competed in a minimum of three shows prior to the 1st of August 2024.   Please note, exhibitors will be required to state the three shows on their entry form.  An allowance will be made for exhibitors who wish to compete in a Show scheduled between their time of entry and the 1st of August, i.e exhibitors will be permitted to list a show that they intend to compete in.  If an exhibitor lists a future show, but is then unable to attend the nominated show for reasons of force majeure, the exhibitor must declare this to the Equestrian Office before the 1st of August.

For 5 year old horses who competed as 4 year olds in 2023, this experience may be used to fulfil the three show requirement. 

Proof of participation at these shows may be requested on arrival at the Dublin Horse Show, and should incorrect or inaccurate information be supplied it will incur elimination.

Veterinary

Please note that horses which have been operated on for a wind infirmity are not eligible for entry into these classes.

Tack

Owners are recommended to compete 4 year old Show Hunters in snaffle bits.

Hunter Championships

During the initial judging of the Championships riders will be asked to carry out their trot display in the proximity of the judges.  The full arena may be used for the canter / gallop display.  Riders are asked to pay particular attention to the instructions of the Stewards on duty.

Classes 1 - 10:

1st €1,300, 2nd €900, 3rd €720, 4th €490, 5th €340

Cups & Trophies

Cup No. 43 – The "Frances Cash" Perpetual Challenge Cup for the Best Heavy-Weight Hunter (Classes 9 and 10).

Cup No. 44 – The “Samuel Ussher Roberts” Perpetual Cup for the Best Light-Weight Hunter (Classes 1 to 5).

Cup No. 62 – The “Joseph Widger” Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the Best Middle-Weight Hunter (Classes 6 to 8).

Cup No. 65 – Perpetual Challenge Cup for the Best Hunter in the Show.  The winners and reserves for Cup Nos. 43, 44, 62, 85 & 98 will compete for this Cup.

Cup No. 85 – The “Galway-Greer” Perpetual Champion Cup for the Best Four-Year-Old Hunter in the Show.  The first and second prize winners of Classes 2, 3, 6 and 9 will compete for this Cup.

Cup No. 98 – Perpetual Challenge Trophy for the Best Hunter Mare.  The first and second prize-winning mares in Classes 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 will compete for the Trophy.

Cup No. 157 – The "Michael W. Hickey" Perpetual Challenge Trophy presented to the rider of the Supreme Hunter Champion.

Parade

Champion and Reserve Champion of the Supreme Hunter Championship, Four Year Old Hunter Championship and the Hunter Mare Championships are required to participate in the in the Parade of Champions on Sunday 13 August.  Further details are available here.
