Aim

To identify high class horses bred in Ireland with the potential to become top class junior or young rider event horses; to encourage producers and trainers to present quality horses that are rideable and competitive for youths coming from ponies or for lightweight adults.

Eligibility

This class is restricted to ‘Irish Bred’ horses only.

Open to horses aged 5 to 7 years old.

To be ridden by riders who have attained their 16th birthday but have not attained their 25th birthday by 1 January 2024.

Riders who have competed in a CCI4*L, CCI4*S or CSI4* competition or higher in the past five years are ineligible to compete in this class.

A change of rider will not be permitted under any circumstances.  Only the horse / rider combination that qualify will be allowed to compete at the DHS.

RDS Members: €250 each entry; Non-Members: €290 each entry.

Rules

Late entries for the DHS will not be accepted, except in the case of qualifiers held after the DHS close of entries date.

Tack
  • Protective headgear conforming to the current recommended BSI Kitemark or Inspec IC Mark standards – PAS 015 2011, Snell E2016 (with official Snell label and number), ASTM F1163 (2004a or 04a onwards with SEI Mark), VG1 01.040 (2014-12), UTAC / CRITT or AS/NZS 3838 (2006 onwards and must have SAI Global mark), and fitted with an adjustable harness, is compulsory for all riders.  (Please note that as of 1 January 2023 hats with PAS 015 (1998) and Snell E2001 kitemarks / standards can no longer be accepted).  Protective headgear conforming to the above standards is compulsory for riders under the age of 16 years and for all rider competing in performance classes.  Please note, at both the qualifiers and the Final, fixed peak hats are not permitted for Phases B & D Phase.

  • A body protector must be worn by all riders during Phase D.

  • Riders must dress according to the Dress Code as stipulated during Phase A.
  • Eventing colours and attire must be worn during Phase D.
  • Only snaffle bridles with any one of the following nosebands: cavesson, drop, flash or grackle are permitted.  This applies to all phases of the competition.
  • Crank nosebands are not permitted.
  • Martingales are not permitted.
  • Fly veils / ear covers are not permitted.
  • Neckstraps and / or breastplates are permitted.
  • Numnahs (if used) must conform neatly with saddle contours.  Saddle cloths or visible logos are not permitted.
  • Hind leg boots or bandages are not allowed in any phase of this competition.  Overreach boots are permitted.
  • Only blunt metal spurs or ones with rubber rowels ≤ 2 1/2cms (1") facing downwards are permitted.
  • The same tack must be used in each phase.  No tack etc. may be worn that conceals the conformation of the horse.
  • No item of tack excluded from competition is allowed in the practice arena.

If for any reason, a competitor goes through the start with incorrect tack, the Judge will have no option but to eliminate that competitor.

Qualification

A rider may enter a maximum of two horses per Junior / Young Rider Event Horse qualifier. A rider may qualify a maximum of two horses for the Junior / Young Rider Event Horse class at the DHS.

The top four horses from each of the four qualifiers will be eligible for entry to the DHS.

This competition at the YES! venues will commence after the Five Year Old Young Event Horse class (approximately mid-afternoon).

Online entry for the qualifiers is available via the following link; https://youngeventhorseseries.ie/entries-start-lists-results/. A qualifier entry fee of €70 must be paid when submitting your entry online.

Entries must be submitted online by 10pm on the Thursday preceding each qualifier.  Please note that this deadline will be strictly adhered to.  All entries for the qualifiers must be made via the online entry system.  Entries will not be accepted by email, phone, fax or post.

Horse / rider combinations must have competed in a minimum of two Junior / Young Rider Event Horse qualifier events before competing at the Dublin Horse Show.

Placings, in the event of an equality of points, will be decided using the following criteria;

  • Highest score in the Jumping phase
  • Highest score in the Ridden Display phase
  • Highest score in the Suitability and Potential phase
  • The final criteria will be the jumping time closest (under) the optimum time.

Horses eligible and entered for a Junior / Young Rider Event Horse class may not compete in a Young Event Horse qualifier at the same venue, i.e. on the same day.  They may however enter a Young Event Horse qualifier at a subsequent qualifying event.  Horses may only qualify for and compete in one category at the Dublin Horse Show, and once qualified horses must remain in that category for subsequent events.  Riders are not permitted to use a completion at a Young Event Horse qualifier to qualify for the Junior / Young Rider Event Horse class.

Competition Format

This class will run as per a specific drawn order available on the official startlist on the Equipe App. 

The class will run over two days with five phases.

Details of Phases A to E are available here.

Placings, in the event of an equality of points, will be decided using the following criteria;

  • The highest score in Phase D (Jumping / Performance)
  • The highest score in Phase A (Ridden Display) 
  • The highest score in Phase E (Suitability & Potential)
  • The final criteria will be the jumping time closest (under) to the optimum time in Phase D (Jumping / Performance).

The grand total will be the horse's final score and will determine its final placing.
